Creative Musings: Fear of Imperfection Stops the Perfectly Imperfect

Oh imperfection.

If perfectionism is something that you deal with it feels like a big deal. I would invite you to start right now by not making imperfection a big deal. Deciding that things are going to be imperfect and that’s just how it’s going to be, can be very freeing. And while of course we always want everything to go perfectly,  we’re human and that’s just life. We are not machines. We’re not going to create perfect things from the start and that’s actually awesome. It is the imperfections that can make things special, like being at a wedding when the baby cries at the perfect moment and it makes that wedding ‘imperfect’ but the perfectly imperfect moments are what make things memorable.

When we create, we want to create good memories, and if you’re always worried about creating imperfections then you’re robbing yourself of the joy that comes from just creating. So I would invite you to remember the times in your life when things turned out imperfectly but in the end, they turned out better. Like that beach trip that you have been planning for but in the end, it rained all weekend but because of that you got to sit cozy by the fire with your kids or your partner or your friends and you all got to have these intimate lovely conversations that you might not have had if you were running around everywhere. Or maybe there was a mistake in the artwork that you created but when you kept going it turned out that it actually made the piece of art. Bob Ross always loved to say ‘happy accidents’ and I think that it is worth embracing that philosophy. When you don’t intend to do something, instead of thinking of it as ‘you messed up and now it’s not perfect’ think of what new you can create from this imperfection. How can I make this imperfection perfectly imperfect?
